Older Vermonters

Most people, without even thinking of it, use common language to describe aging as a negative experience. Unfortunately, this language contributes to "ageism" in our culture, which is a stereotyping or discrimination of a person or group of people because of their age. This is a serious challenge in our culture and communities, manifesting in the unconscious thoughts we have, the actions we take, and in the social policies and systems we create.

Here is what Vermont is doing to begin the journey of "Reframing Aging" in Vermont:

Not only do many older Vermonters need physical supports to help them remain independent and at home, but many also benefit from mental health supports.

Older Americans Act (OAA) services support Vermonters age 60 and older and are designed to help older Vermonters remain as independent as possible and to experience a high quality of life. OAA services are provided through Vermont’s five Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) and include case management; nutrition services and programs; health promotion and disease prevention; information, referral and assistance; legal assistance; and family caregiver support.
